Every runner’s path is unique. Success comes not just from sound training theory, but from a balanced and mindful approach that aligns with each athlete’s specific needs and values. I aspire to produce happy and strong runners for life.

Meet Coach Matt Waller

My goal is to ensure every runner’s journey is positive, healthy, and successful. I believe this can be achieved through personalized training and ongoing feedback.

Fundamentally, my training is designed to improve your aerobic capacity, running economy, lactate threshold, and V02 max in ways that align with your specific strengths, needs, and lifestyle. We will work together to integrate these vital components for optimal running performance and enjoyment.

Over the years, my knowledge and skills have been applied in numerous formalized coaching contexts as well as everyday interactions with runners of all skill levels.

As a team member at Bull City Running Co. between 2010 and 2014, I was privileged to work with many exceptional runners and coaches. I relished the opportunity to absorb sound training theory and life lessons while leading training programs and pursuing self-study of exercise physiology.

I spent several seasons on the coaching staff at Carrboro High School during a period of great success. The girls’ team won three consecutive cross country state championships, and the boys finished on the state championship podium three years in a row.

Since my time at Carrboro High, I have continued coaching both competitive and recreational runners alike, helping them improve performance, build resilience, and rediscover their love of the sport.

In accordance with my commitment to athlete safety, I am currently certified in Heartsaver CPR and First Aid as well as Youth Mental Health First Aid. I am also up to date on Safe Sport training through USA Track & Field.

With you every step of the way

"Matt trained me between my freshman and sophomore years of high school and set me up for a successful cross country season, taking over a minute off my 5k PR [18:36 to 16:51], and a breakout track season in both the 800m and 1,600m. Matt helped me establish good habits to remain injury-free and provided tailored workouts that helped me achieve my goals. Matt's knowledge and passion for running is second to none which is reflected in the effort he puts into training his athletes."
